Is This Woman Insane or Daft?
A Murang'a medic named Dr Charles Kigo, boss of Murang'a District Hospital, highlights concerns over the number of home births in the district. He reported findings to group of women visiting mothers at Murang'a District Hospital's maternity wing on International Women's Day last Tuesday.
He suggested that this should be blamed on the fact that mothers ignored the need for antenatal care. Dr Kigo continued to claim that this trend of home births has led to a decline in the population as infant mortality has risen.
First Objection:
Murang'a women or any woman for that matter, are unlikely to be ignorant to the need of hospital care. They just cannot afford it. Is this guy ignorant to the need for money? Kenya becomes more and more expensive with no government intervention or assistance and people like this make clumsy generalizations like this.
Murang'a Women's Leader Confuses Population and Poverty
A leader of a women's group, Jacinta Wangari, appears to be oblivious to poverty in Kenya when she recalls the high number of foetuses found dumped in the district every week as pregnant women have illegal abortions. She claims that the Kenyan government is not doing enough to tackle such illegal surgical procedures. Well, the Kenyan government has done nothing to tackle the poverty that leads to women fearing poverty for their future children, to take such extreme actions. Why would they then take notice of illegal abortions when they will not address the cause for its demand, hakuna pesa!
Now This is Just Unforgivable Ignorance
Jacinta Wangari, in a seemingly caring statement, appealed for government hospitals not to harrass mothers who were unable to afford hospital fees. Okay, fair enough. This is a fair request. However, she unwittingly urges mothers in Murang'a district, where she earlier acknowledged the sad state of high abortions and marternal deaths, to "Get one more child each to rescue the declining population". What!? Will she pay the hospital fees and feed these children?
